Climate

For Portland:

The climate in Portland is very typical of the Pacific Northwest. The climate here is mild year-around. Neither hot nor cold — it's comfortable all year long.

Summers are mild, with low humidity and very little rain. Pleasant temperatures average in the mid-70s fahrenheit / 22° - 26 °C. August is the warmest month, with temperatures in the low to mid-80s fahrenheit / 27° - 30° C.

Winter is generally a cloudy and rainy season, with temperatures averaging in the mid 40s fahrenheit and low 50s fahrenheit / 6° - 12° C.

Spring and Fall are absolutely gorgeous. Colorful spring flowers and leafy green trees brighten the landscape at every turn, between March - June. Spring weather is always changing —sunny one moment, brief spring showers another. Autumn is long with warm days and cool nights. Brilliant golden and red colored changing trees paint the valleys and hillsides.

There's a stereotype that it rains a lot here. Yes, it does rain, 36 inches (90 cm) a year to be exact —that's what makes this region so green. However Portland's annual rainfall is less than that of Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. About 88 percent of the area's rain falls between October and May; snowfall and below zero temperatures are rare.

Clothing
Because of Portland's mild, cool, and rainy climate, people here tend to dress in casual, comfortable clothes. Layered clothing is common. When the sun comes out, take off a layer or two. Keep a light jacket, sweater or long-sleeve shirt handy for when it gets cool. Umbrellas are optional. The rain in Portland is light and misty, rarely hard and heavy. You'll find that even on rainy days, most people in Portland don't use umbrellas.
