Q1. I want to come to the US early before the start of the IELP classes. How far in advance before school starts can I arrive?

A: F-1 and J-1 students can arrive no earlier than 30 days before the start date on your I-20 form.

Q2. I want to travel during the school break/vacation period. What should I do?

A: Visit the IELP International Student Advisor, in East Hall, room 101, to get a signature on the back of your I-20 Form. Check whether your F-1 visa in your passport is still valid.

Q3. Can I travel to Mexico or Canada while I am a student?

A: Yes, a student with an F-1 student visa should take his/her passport and I-20 form to the IELP International Student Advisor (in East Hall, room 101) BEFORE finalizing traveling plans to Mexico or Canada. A valid signature on your I-20 for re-entry to the US is required. Some students may also require a Canadian or Mexican visa in order to enter these countries. Since immigration regulations often change, you should also consult with the IELP International Student Advisor BEFORE you travel outside the United States.

If you have a travel-related question, please contact either the IELP office or the International Student Advisor.
